Our Approach
Imaginative
Helping make projects a reality is what we are all about. We have seen, time again, how thoughtful, imaginative architecture can transform a learning experience and the benefits that come from providing space for innovation and ideas. We start with this end in mind.
Experienced
After nearly four decades of architectural practice, education and architecture are inseparable in what we do and how we create. We never stop learning from our clients and collaborators, the research they are undertaking or the questions they put to us. Whether it’s teachers combining art, music, and literature into one class or engineers utilising natural ground water to reduce heating costs, every discovery inspires potential ideas in designing for people.
Collaborative
Collaboration with our clients starts with a conversation, building an understanding of what’s needed, the curiosity to seek out what’s possible and care in seeing things completed. We get invested in your stories and we understand that development is an opportunity for clients to think about their people, their places and make transformational changes or critical improvements.
Empathetic
We design with empathy. We take care to balance the big picture aspirations with the small details that really make a difference to maintaining and using space. Words like ‘flexible’ can mean so many different things and it’s our job to help make sure that spaces really do work flexibly for you and what you are spending.
Proactive
As custodians of your ideas, we can pro-actively guide the design process, and the investment you are making, from start to finish. Sometimes we discover the unexpected or clients need different support as projects progress, especially when transforming old buildings and we will help find solutions to the inevitable challenges that arise along the way.
Innovative
We embrace innovation in how we design. We will model a virtual protype in our BIM software to test, coordinate and refine designs with the team. The models become an invaluable asset when working with contractors, responding quickly to the rapid pace of construction but our technology can also generate flythroughs and virtual reality tours to help you visualise your project and share with everyone involved.
Balanced
With so many voices contributing to the conversation, every project is a balancing act. Taking care to communicate clearly, to understand people’s different expectations and hopes, and to follow a well-structured briefing process is at the heart of this balance. We listen and remain responsive throughout your development journey.
Be part of the conversation
Whatever your starting point, if you need a new teaching space or want to spruce up tired buildings; if you want to create more space or make better use of the space you have, we’d love to talk. If you’d like to find out more click here.
“…We are extremely pleased with LTS (Little Titchfield Street – Law School), we are very happy with all the projects IID have done for UoW (University of Westminster).”
Alessandra Foderaro – Deputy Director, Capital Development
University of Westminster
“…I just wanted to thank you, Richard and everyone who has been involved in this great project; the building looks fantastic and it’s great that it has come in on time and on budget!”
Simon Frost – Chair of Governors – Notre Dame School
“So I wanted to thank you so very much – Nick, Anna in particular, for your unfailing patience …. care and precision. And above all, for your vision – and your ability (a magical power surely), to translate my impassioned and often incoherent ramblings, into something entirely unique and beautiful.”
Jane Lunnon (former Head) on Wimbledon High School
“Very happy with IID who first helped us set our strategic vision in the context of a well-developed master plan and then delivered two impressive building projects simultaneously. They worked collaboratively to overcome several challenges and have delivered what they promised – inspired design that also meets the operational needs of the School.…they are proactive, imaginative and client-focussed, which is just what I was looking for in a design consultant.”
Mark Mackenzie Crooks (former Business Director) on St Helen’s School
“What a team effort and what fantastic feedback from the councillors to a truly well thought out scheme…it was quite emotional watching. Very many thanks and congratulations.”
David Thompson (Chief Operating Officer) on Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School
“Congratulations!! I am so thrilled for you and for IID, what a recognition of the outstanding team you are. We certainly felt that when we worked with you on the Coach House project that we were surrounded with professionalism.”
Alyson Lobo (Headteacher) Manor Lodge School – in response to IID being shortlisted for the Building Awards and Building Design Architect of the Year Awards
“…what a privilege to have worked with you all on such an amazing project. It’s absolutely everything that we wanted it to be and more. The top floor, playground in the sky and 6th form outside space is perfect, just what was needed and it looks beautiful, the spaces below provide the perfect setting for 21st Century learning and exploration, just how Jane envisaged it back in 2017. The Auditorium gives the extra place to gather, that was always missing at WHS and of course the furniture and fittings inside are perfect.”

History
IID started with a conversation. Two architects, Alan Brown and Chris Box, realised they both wanted to pursue better ways to design and practise architecture. They wanted to set their own agenda and put people, family, kindness and integrity at the heart of their young practice.
Alan & Chris wanted to make clients and stakeholders the centre of the design conversation, appreciating that their voices were crucial to achieving distinctive buildings which are a joy to inhabit.
That was in 1984 and we now have working relationships that go back over 25 years, a result of listening to and crafting our architecture around each client.
Our portfolio grew from early projects for churches, schools and houses but all with a focus on community. After nearly 40 years of designing education projects, mentoring talented graduates and teaching at Universities, IID have a wealth of experience in education architecture and people still remain at the heart of what we do.
