IID were recommended by the Head of Tiffin School to Farnborough, a school with a tremendous history and home to a charming Adrian Gilbert Scott Chapel. Our brief was to provide a music tech room, music practice rooms and a larger choir room for rehearsals and performances in a high-quality contemporary form that would be a sensitive and subtle addition to the existing listed structure and the landscape.
The extension is situated next to the chapel with a low flat roofed music wing housing the teaching accommodation. A glazed link connects this to the heptagonal Choir Room. The geometric form is topped with a zinc standing seam pitched roof which rises to a glass lantern.
The space was deliberately designed to be asymmetric so that no flat planes were directly opposite one another as this hugely enhanced the sound quality in the building. The form is light, engaging and respectful of its surrounds.
Music is a central part of life at the school and is celebrated daily with 15 choirs, orchestras and chamber ensembles rehearsing each week to prepare for a busy programme of performances. The graceful form of the Choir room contributes hugely to this aspect of school life.
‘It is a really beautiful building and everyone enjoys using it.’
