A new zero carbon home - arising from the need to meet Passivhaus and Code for Sustainable Homes criteria, the building layout has been kept rectangular in in footprint.
The principal spaces on the upper floor all face south, benefiting from the views and maximum sunlight, with external access via a timber decked balcony (a brise-soleil for lower area) which connects to the lower level at either end via cantilevered stone steps.
The simple arrangement, with minimal internal load-bearing walls allows considerable layout flexibility for the future. The overall form is a gentle peeled arch running up and over the upper level accommodation, with an intensively planted roof.
Using traditional materials in a contemporary manner, the main building façades are faced with local dry-stone walling as a rain-screen and dressed stone edgings to give a crisp profile to the arched structure.
