Masterplan Case Study:
Wimbledon High School
Location Wimbledon, Greater London
Client Girls’ Day School Trust
Three phases of development were undertaken to target several key challenges faced by the school.
The project embodies IID’s ‘Rubik’s Cube’ approach to masterplanning, where each phase facilitates the next, allowing a busy working site to be transformed with minimal disruption to school life.
IID worked closely with school staff at every step of the design and construction process to ensure that this could be achieved.
Within a timeframe of approximately five years from IID’s initial appointment, the school have gained an inspiring building for the interdisciplinary teaching of STEAM subjects, a dedicated sixth form centre, improved dining facilities, and a new assembly and performance space where the whole school can gather. Meanwhile, careful site planning has improved transparency between spaces and created active and vibrant external courtyards.
Wimbledon High School have named this project ‘Ex Humilibus’, which means ‘from small things, greatness’.
