Following our work with London Borough of Newham in producing their school estate Strategy for Change, IID were then appointed to produce project briefs for primary school expansion projects. We then worked with Willmott Dixon to expand both Dersingham Infants and Sheringham Juniors in Manor Park into 3 Form Entry Primary Schools.
Due to tight urban sites both of these schools feature rooftop play spaces and are constructed from CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber), a carbon-neutral kit of parts which allowed the building shells to be erected in two weeks.
Dersingham features sliding doors and balconies to all classrooms, which are daylit and ventilated from a generous central breakout corridor. The rooftop playground is home to the school’s eco-garden and the new Nursery also uses sliding doors to benefit from the outside space.
Sheringham’s philosophy of ‘vertical teaching’ between year groups meant that teaching support space allowance was put towards additional classrooms, providing teachers with valuable flexibility. The school’s two rooftop decks and timber-screened playdeck above staff parking create an inspiring urban environment for exploration and creative learning.
Excellent projects delivered under difficult circumstances due to the restricted sizes of the occupied sites. Can only say again how much we have appreciated your and others’ efforts at IID to make these projects happen.
