A vision for the future
We have been working with Hampton since 1993 when, after an initial teaching block project, we were asked to produce a site development strategy. This has since been used as a regular review for a continuing range of projects including the Hammond Theatre in 2009, Hampton Prep School in 2016, teaching and dining accommodation, laboratories and a boathouse over the years.
In 2014 we were invited to tender for the Hammond Quad development project along with five other architects as the school carried out its due diligence with an external consultant. Following a detailed submission, concept design and interview, we were delighted to be re-appointed by the school.
In line with the brief, we worked up our design for a three-storey extension within the Hammond Quad which would provide a Sixth Form Study Centre, including quiet study areas, teaching spaces, offices, a careers suite and associated storage facilities. The site is located within the heart of the school and enclosed on all sides by existing buildings. The extension completely encloses the existing courtyard with a glazed roof and the 3-storey pod sits within the centre of the quad. There are glazed bridge links to the existing surrounding circulation areas at first and second floors. An additional storey was added to the existing two storey extension on the southern end of the quad.
As well as bringing to life a disused external space, the Sixth Form Study and Careers Centre brings together everything the students need to prepare for their life outside school.
