Whilst the Oxford University accommodation of the imagination tends to be a set of rooms in a medieval building, the reality can be much more comfortable and considerably warmer ….
New College Oxford asked IID to design new residential accommodation for 96 post graduate students, along with site administration offices and a family house. This had to be located within a sensitive conservation area near a branch of the River Cherwell at the College Sports Ground. As one of the best college Sports Grounds in the university and beautifully kept, our proposals had to be meticulously sympathetic to the setting.
Red brick with limestone creates a graceful composition which sits well alongside the existing pavilion. Elements of stained glass detailing and elegant corner oriel windows bring a distinctive aspect to the development.
Now named Weston Buildings, the accommodation comprises 16 houses each containing 6 single rooms and 3 bathrooms with a large, modern kitchen and a dining area which looks out onto the university grounds.
‘Top place to live provided your room isn’t too close to the geese.’
