IID’s brief was to develop a masterplan to bring coherence to the piecemeal development that had taken place over fifty years at Tormead. After full planning was received for the senior school site, redevelopment began on new Art & Graphics rooms as well as spacious Common Rooms for both the 5th and 6th Forms.
In 2015, Phase II and III were completed to provide extensive teaching accommodation and a new dining atrium filled with natural light. The atrium also provides expansive circulation space allowing pupils to move more freely around the school.
At the same time a new energy centre was incorporated into the development, featuring a biomass boiler. Together with increased thermal efficiency, low energy lighting and mixed mode ventilation systems this means the school’s energy usage and primary energy costs have been dramatically reduced.
