Authentic Learning
When you’re 5 metres below ground, daylight is limited to pavement lights and there are no views out, the design challenge is real. To solve the problem we lit the spaces with reflected and ambient light, a warm-coloured wall of light at the end of the space gives the impression of low sun. Lighting was via coves in the ceiling which give diffuse light and make the space feel taller and task lighting to the rear of the space helps to provide a feeling of calm focus. The material palette is inspired by nature to give a connection to the outside.
Teaching spaces facilitate the university’s authentic learning agenda with large, flexible rooms to allow groups to form and presentations to be shared around the space. The area between gives the opportunity for study and social use.
The project was build by BW Workspace, RLB were project managers and Hoare Lee provided the services design.
