At Thomas’s College, behind the imposing 1842 Oxbridge-style façade of the main building, sits Sir Edward Maufe’s (1882 – 1974) extension from 1932 which was designed as a library and catalogue room.
We found the original vaulted ceiling and English oak bookcases still in place but many later additions had altered this space far beyond it’s original simplicity and it was no longer looking its best. Work is ongoing to refurbish the 1930s features still in place and restore it to a working library for a new era of students and we’re looking forward to seeing it shine as one of the spaces embodying traditional excellence at Thomas’s.
